After a long day’s work, nothing feels better than climbing in bed. Resting your head on your favorite pillow or falling asleep on your favorite couch. You deserved that beauty rest but unfortunately for your spouse, roommate, or anyone else that lives in your house they didn’t get the same peaceful sleep you did. Because your snoring kept the whole neighborhood awake. There’s nothing wrong with a little snore while you slumber but it can come between relationships and marriages that can lead to sleeping in separate bedrooms.
Why do you snore? The noise comes from air passing through obstructed airways the result in the vibration of the surrounding soft tissue. Culprits causing the blockage could be an enlarged tongue, throat deformities, or the structure of your jaw.
There are mixed reviews on over the counter medicine and oral applications like mouth guards and nasal strips while you sleep. Beware: while some could help with mild snoring some are just money wells. One free solution could be your health! Slimming down can lessen the amount of weight around your neck that could be putting pressure on the airways. You can also adjust the position of how you sleep. Laying on your side alleviates the airways, or going nights without using a pillow (or sometimes using a different pillow) may help, too.
Now a little less than half of us snore in our sleep. Sometimes it is a mild inconvenience to you and your loved ones, but when can it be detrimental to your health? The problem comes when the airway is completely blocked while you’re asleep or breathing is slowed leading to a restless night. This stopping and going of air can happen up to a hundred times and negatively affect your life. High blood pressure, fatigue, heart failure, and even stroke can be attributed to sleep apnea.
