Back To School Supplies & Allergy Testing

It’s that time of year again! As the summer months come to a close, parents and their soon-to-be students are heading to the stores to stock up on pencils, paper and all of the other necessities found on school supplies lists.

As preparation checklists seem to get longer, one thing you don’t want to forget is taking your child to a board-certified allergist before the school-year begins. With a new environment surrounded by new friends, your child could potentially face new triggers if they suffer from allergies and asthma. Our Allergist in Little Rock is ready to help! Here are some ways you and your child can get prepared before the school year begins:

Visit an allergist. By seeing an allergist, you can create an action plan for you and your child to identify triggers and help identify what may potentially cause allergic reactions or symptoms.

Visit the school. Consider meeting with your child’s new teacher and walk through the classroom to identify new class pets, or talk with them about your child’s specific needs in relation to allergies.

Plan for food allergies. If your child has food allergies, be sure to include those in their file at school and talk to your child’s teacher about them. Bagged lunches ensure that your child can stay away from potentially harmful triggers.

Plan for outdoor allergies. Study the recess schedule if it applies! If your child will be spending extensive time outdoors while at school, it’s helpful to know this beforehand so you can prepare accordingly!

In Case of Emergency. Think of an emergency plan in the case that there’s a threatening allergic reaction. Children who are at risk of serious reactions should have epinephrine at-hand and know how to use it (or debrief staff so they can help.)

Students that have difficulty breathing, sneeze constantly or deal with itchy and watery eyes may not get the sleep they need to perform at their best. Use the checklist to prepare your child for the school year, and schedule an appointment with an allergist for allergy testing. Help your child feel great as they begin a new school year!
