Seasoned Sinuses: What am I suffering from?

Are you a victim of pollen allergies? If so, the arrival of fall may not have you as excited as your friends. As the cooler temps approach and the trees start changing vibrant colors, hay fever starts to affect about 30 million Americans this time of year. Are you one of them?

Or are you suffering from a sinus infection?

This time of year often brings about confusion about whether or not we suffer from allergies, sensitive sinuses or even the common cold. Our Little Rock allergist has some clues to help you identify what may be going on:

  • If you’re suffering from discomfort above the neck, you can usually attribute these to allergies. Nasal blockage or a runny nose, sneezing, itching or watery eyes are just a few to get us started.

  • However, a sinus infection, or sinusitis, offers more severe ailments. While you might also suffer from nasal blockage, these infections can cause your temperature to rise and a fever to ensue along with a more severe headache, cough or yellow/green nasal discharge.

If you think you might just be suffering from pollen allergies, talk to your allergist to identify a strategy for fighting them. Treatments can differ depending on where you live, your way of life and your body chemistry.

If you’re prone to sinus infections, make sure you’re aware of the symptoms so that you can see a doctor quickly. Infections that are left alone can often lead to more serious illness so it’s important to seek treatment immediately.
